A 63 year old man named Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks) is buying a length of rope at a supermarket. However, he looked a little annoyed because the price of the rope did not match what was stated. Finally, Otto decided to ask to meet the supermarket manager.

Otto lives in a small housing complex and he often goes on patrol to keep the housing complex clean and tidy. However, he always considered everyone there to be a nuisance, so he didn’t care much about them.

Some time after that, Otto decided to retire from his job. On that day, the supermarket manager deliberately threw a farewell party for Otto. However, Otto didn’t like it to the point that he scolded the postman for entering the residential street.

Otto also decided to stop all facilities in his house, such as cutting off electricity and turning off the telephone. Finally, he used the rope he had bought earlier with the intention of committing suicide.

However, when he was about to do it, a neighbor had just moved there. They made a lot of noise when parking the car, so Otto was disturbed by their presence. The neighbor, Marisol, who was very pregnant and her husband Tommy, had two children named Luna and Abbie in the car.

Tommy was confused about parking the car, Otto finally helped them. After that, Marisol brought food as a sign of thanks to Otto. And, unexpectedly, the food was so delicious that Otto greedily finished it.

After that, Otto tried to commit suicide again. Luckily, Otto’s suicide attempt was thwarted by the rotten platform of his house. After that, Otto went to the grave of his wife, Sonya. It was revealed that his motivation for committing suicide was to quickly meet his wife in heaven.

Back in the past, where Otto was still a military school student. But unfortunately, Otto was diagnosed by doctors as having a disease called cardiomyopathy so he could not continue army training. He then meets Sonya on the train. At that time, Sonya kindly bought Otto a train ticket and gave him a one cent coin as a souvenir.

Otto goes on his usual neighborhood patrol and meets Jimmy (Cameron Britton), his friendly neighbor. However, at that time the property agent Dye & Merica came who just wanted to look at Otto’s house.

After that, Marisol and Tommy came with cake and borrowed a ladder because the windows in their house couldn’t be opened. Then, Anita, Otto’s elderly neighbor, asks Otto for help to repair the heating in her house. Even though he was reluctant, Otto helped Anita on the condition that he get back the garden hose he had lent her.

Apart from that, Otto also doesn’t like Anita’s husband, Reuben, who suffered a stroke. Anita said her son, Chris, had suggested placing her in a nursing home. As Otto is about to leave, Reuben grabs the hose and holds it as if he knows what Otto is actually going to do with it, but Otto manages to grab it.

While in his car in the garage, Otto tried to commit suicide again by poisoning himself with carbon monoxide through a hose. He remembered his dinner date with Sonya. Otto doesn’t order any food and finally admits that he feels he has no future because he can’t join the army. He also complained about the difficulty of getting a job. He was ready if Sonya didn’t want to have anything to do with him anymore. However, Sonya proved her love by kissing Otto in front of the other visitors who cheered them on.

When Otto almost died, Marisol suddenly started banging on the garage door because Tommy had fallen down the stairs and had been taken to the hospital. He wants Otto to drive him because he doesn’t have a driver’s license. Otto was confused by the request, but in the end he still helped them.

At the hospital, Otto sits with Luna and Abbie to read stories in a funny voice. They called him “Abuelo Otto” (Grandfather Otto). They are approached by a hospital clown named Beppo. He asks for coins for magic show. Otto gives Sonya coins and asks her to return them when he is finished. But when he finished, Otto saw that the clown had swapped the coins. Otto gets angry and starts attacking him which makes Beppo cry. Luckily the hospital staff intervened for them. Otto then takes the family home, and Marisol sees him smile a little.

The next morning, Marisol finds a nearly dead cat lying in the snow. With help from Jimmy and Otto, they warm the cat, and Jimmy takes the cat.

Otto goes to the train station while remembering when he graduated from college and proposed to Sonya. Otto walks towards the train tracks, as if preparing to commit suicide. But suddenly a man nearby fainted and fell onto the tracks. The other people didn’t help him and just filmed the man. Otto decided to jump onto the rail to help the man back up. He was then helped by another person to return upstairs. The other passengers consider Otto a hero.

When he got home, Otto was visited by Marisol and Jimmy. Jimmy gave up the cat yesterday because he was allergic. Ottok put the cat in a box and took him to visit Sonya’s grave.

Then, Otto met a teenager named Malcolm, the newspaper deliveryman on his bicycle. Malcolm tells Otto that he is Sonya’s former student. Malcolm really respects Sonya because he was the one who accepted her as a transgender person. Otto then befriends Malcolm.

After that, Otto decided to teach Marisol to drive a manual car by bringing his own car. Even though Marisol often broke down on the road and annoyed a pickup truck driver, Otto remained patient. They stopped at a bakery that Otto and Sonya usually visited. Otto buys Marisol the Swedish eclairs they used to eat together. Otto tells about his past life with Sonya and how they became friends with Reuben and Anita, even though there were often disputes between Otto and Reuben because of their different tastes in cars.

Later, Marisol asks Otto to look after Luna and Abbie because she and Tommy are going on a date. Otto also helps Malcolm fix his bicycle chain. He was then met by a social media journalist named Shari Kenzie who wanted to interview Otto about rescuing a man who had fallen on the train tracks. However, Otto refused.

Marisol arrives and offers to help clean out Otto’s belongings, including Sonya’s coat. Otto angrily rejects Marisol’s help. This was made worse by the arrival of property agent Dye & Merica, making Otto’s heart beat fast. Marisol tries to help him, but he ignores her and enters the house and locks it.

Otto took the rifle. He again remembered the bitter memories with Sonya. They once visited Niagara Falls and on their way home, the bus they were on had a tragic accident. Sonya became paralyzed and they lost the baby she was carrying at that time.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, making Otto accidentally shoot the roof in surprise. It turned out that the person who came was Malcolm, asking permission to stay on the sofa because his father had kicked him out. Otto allows Malcolm to stay temporarily. The next morning, Malcolm helps Otto make coffee and breakfast. He also follows Otto on patrol.

One day, Jimmy tells Otto about Dye & Merica’s shenanigans. They plan to evict Reuben and Anita from their house after learning that Anita suffers from Parkinson’s. This company is suspected of conspiring with Chris to sell his parents’ house. Even though Chris had never contacted them for years and lived in Japan.

Otto had to act immediately and asked Marisol to borrow his cell phone. However, Marisol refused because she was offended by Otto’s previous attitude. Otto finally apologizes and tells his life story, including attempting suicide after losing Sonya. Also about him being fired from his job as head of the Home Owners Association for attacking a board member. Finally, Marisol allowed Otto to use her cell phone and Otto knew who to call.

Not long after that, an agent from Dye & Merica arrived along with several other people. They wanted to take Reuben and Anita from their house. However, Otto had prepared Shari and his team to broadcast the incident live on social media. They obtained Otto and Anita’s medical files illegally, and lied about having negotiated the sale of the house with Chris.

The agent tried to defend himself by saying that no one could care for Reuben and Anita in their condition. But Jimmy firmly said that he would take care of them because they were like his own family. Ultimately, the agent was forced to leave for the sake of their good name.

Suddenly, Otto fell unconscious. Marisol accompanied him to the hospital. The doctor tells Marisol that Otto’s heart is enlarged, and Marisol laughs at the irony. Someone like Otto has too big a heart. Some time later, Marisol gave birth to a son, named Marco.

At Marco’s birth party, Otto presented him with the crib he had made for his son with Sonya. Otto then takes Marisol’s family to Sonya’s grave to introduce them. Otto also visits Reuben and Anita.

Several years passed, Otto gave his car to Malcolm. He buys a new car and takes Marisol and the kids to the store. But one morning, Tommy tells Marisol that Otto didn’t clear the snow. Marisol and Tommy went to Otto’s house and found Otto dead in his bed. Marisol cries over Otto’s body, while Tommy finds a letter Otto wrote to Marisol.

In the letter, Otto explains that he did not commit suicide and that he knew that his time would come. Otto has also arranged with his lawyer to bequeath his house, money, and cat, to Marisol and her family. Otto also tells Sonya not to allow Tommy to drive his new Chevy, and only Marisol is allowed.

They then hold a funeral service for Otto, attended by Malcolm, Shari, and the others. Jimmy and Malcolm promise to continue patrolling like Otto did. Otto was buried next to Sonya.
